“Apple will not distribute applications that contain inappropriate content, such as pornography,” an Apple spokesman told CNN Thursday afternoon. “The developer of this application added inappropriate content directly from their server after the application had been approved and distributed, and after the developer had subsequently been asked to remove some offensive content. This was a direct violation of the terms of the iPhone Developer Program. The application is no longer available on the App Store.”

I used the following settings for MMS:

APN: Orange.mms
Username: mms
Password: mms

Max. Messagesize: 300 (don’t know if that is correct – but it works)
MMS UUA Prof URL: leave it blank

I managed to install a custom mobileconfig file to get tethering working (thanks to benm.at), and later to create my very own ipcc file to install via iTunes 8.2, but MMS won’t work. So I called up Orange support:

Orange: Hell my name is … how can I help you?

Me: I would like to know when I will be able to send and receive MMS.

Orange: Did you upgrade your iPhone to the latest software?

Me: Yes, I did upgrade to OS 3.0 yesterday.

Orange: Our technicans are working on that. Should be up and running in the next few days. Please be patient

Me: Okay, thanks for the help.

How I Found A Bug In iPhone Software 2.0

And then realized that I’m just an idiot. When calculating the cube root of a number you’d use a scientific calculator or a non-scientific calculator with a little trick.

Given that the new iPhone/iPod touch software features a scientific calculator I tried some functions like the x-th root of y. When you caluclate the cube of 3 we get 27, so the cube root of 27 is 3. And every time I’ve had hit the 3 after entering 27 “n-th root button” 3 I ended up with 1.4422495. Which is the cube root of 3. Then I tried it with the cube roots of 64 and 125 which resulted in 4 and respectively 5. Then again cube root of 27, and again 1.4422495. I did it. I found a bug. So I tried to call up Greuff and Wogri, who didn’t pick up their phones. And then I tried it again. 27 “n-th root button” 3. And then the calculator showed me a result of 3.

What has happened here? Lucky me did hit the “n-th root button” twice every time I tried before. So no bug to file, just my crippled fingers and me thinking that I’m a genius.

WWDC 2008: The 3G iPhone

I want must have won’t buy one don’t know what do to. Apple strictened the contracts so now you can’t buy and activate the iPhone yourself, but have to buy and activate it in the shop of an official reseller near you. But I want one, I hate my Windows Mobile piece of crap and I must sync with the office’s Exchange server – so there’s not really an alternative. Or I’ll keep my iPod touch, pay that ten bucks for the software update to 2.0 and sync my contacts and calendars that way. Did I mention that I hate my Windows Mobile piece of shit crap?

Apple, I know you don’t consider advices of some Austrian kid, but wouldn’t you make a whole lot more money if you’d sell the iPhone to anyone? Forget those exclusive contracts, they’re so 1990 and give us what we want. iPhone, 16GB, for 200 bucks a piece without the hassle. Maniac said something utterly true about the iPhone:

By the way, iPhones will be sold with exclusive contracts only, it’s dead to me now.

iPhone SDK was released yesterday, and will feature fully ActiveSync capabilities coming with firmware version 2.0. Wait a second, does that mean the iPhone can now be synced with Exchange over the air, and can now send and receive contacts, appointments and mails via push technology? Yes, it does. Well done, but I’ll receive my new Windows Mobile phone today, so no iPhone for me (for now).

Just some notes regarding todays keynote held by Steve Jobs. The Macbook Air seems quite astounding, I wouldn’t believe that it is possible to build a notebook that is even thinner than Kate Moss. Nice gadget for sure. iPod touch/iPhone firmware update is a good idea, especially rearranging icons looks really cute, but charging customers 19 bucks sucks. Period. Apple TV 2, being a software update is a very good idea, especially because I bought an Apple TV the other day on eBay. Movie rental won’t be available in Europe until further notice, but seems to be okay. Did I forget something? Ah, yes, Time Capsule an external harddisk with WiFi. If you already own an Airport Extreme base station (like me), and an external harddisk connected to the Airport Extreme and want to backup your Mac to that very harddisk, open Terminal on your Mac, enter

This should neither be Apple promotion nor a ‘Kill the iPhone’-post, but an objective review of the iPhone itself. And I will compare it to real good mobile devices like the Sony Ericsson P1i and the Nokia N95.

When Apple announced that they’re going to reinvent the phone, they lied. Period. They didn’t reinvent anything, Apple made an utterly new user interface, called multitouch, which you can operate with two fingers at the same time. That pinching and twisting really rocks, no doubt about that. The iPhone is also capable of syncing calendars and contacts, like any other mobile phone is. You can send SMS, but you can’t send MMS. Now, I don’t exactly know how the US market looks like, but in Europe sending MMS is state of the art. The built-in camera is less than a joke, two Megapixels – come on. And you can’t film anything. The iPhone doesn’t support the UMTS standard. which, at least in Europe, again is state of the art. That EDGE/GPRS crap is just not fast enough. According to Apple, the iPhone does not support UMTS networks because the chip still needs to much energy, so the battery charge wouldn’t last that long. Either Steve Jobs is lying (then why do Nokia and SonyEricsson make their phones UMTSsuitable) or WLAN availability in the US is at almost 99%, so that EDGE/GPRS is just a compromise, helping you connecting to the Internet, whenever you’re out in the woods.

So, what have the obvious rivals to come up with? Well, the P1i features WLAN, UMTS support, a real replaceable battery, Java, a 3.2 Megapixel camera, you can use any mp3 as ringtone, a media player, the lot. Nokia’s N95, is not only a phone but a GPS receiver, features a five Megapixel camera, capable of filming at 30fps, and everything the P1i has to offer (except the touchscreen).

And what is it with that exclusive contract with AT&T respectively T-Mobile et al? Visual voicemail is okay, but I could easily live without it and therefore have an unlocked iPhone.

The iPhone’s SDK is not open to developers, only web applications are supported. Great when you’re not online. You can’t use mp3s as your ringtone, either buy one in iTunes or get some workaround software. How hard would that be to implement? The user interface is really great, but when it comes to real features like every other phone has to offer, the iPhone loses its zest. Apple showed that they can change a market (with the iPod), but I don’t think the iPhone will kill any other phone or manufacturer, however, 1.000.000 sold iPhones is a good start.

Until the iPhone is not open for developers, is available without a contract, and is a worthy opponent of the N95 or the P1i, I fear it will be bombed off soon after its release.

New iPods

I think the new iPods rock. I’d buy the iPod touch immediately, if it wasn’t for its low storage capacity of 16GBs. The new nanos look like a shrunken iPod Video and feature full video playback functionality. The iPod classic now offers 160GB for the same price as the iPod Video with 80GBs. The iPhone 4GB model got stomped, only the 8GB model still available with a price drop by 200 bucks – that also caused the Apple shares to drop slightly. Now it should be affordable, but I still don’t want that crap contract thing with it. That’s the reason why unlocked iPhones go over the ebay-counter for at least 1000 bucks. How did those sellers get their iPhones without the AT&T contract. I’d really like to know. Well, thanks to Apple’s new price for the 80GB iPod classic I can’t sell my 80GB iPod Video for more than 200 bucks, which leaves me with a gap of another 200 bucks to buy the iPod touch although I don’t want to have that one – 16GBs, man, I really don’t want to think about what I’d like to hear/see/watch the next day, but I’m certain the gadget loving part of my brain will not stop distributing endorphins every time I see the new iPod touch until I buy one.
