Travelling by train is great. Either I’m asleep all the time, or I’m watching TV shows or movies on my iPod. What sucks about travelling by train are delays. And no free seats. And when you’ve had a twelve hour working day, and some guy sits next to you who smells like a blend of sweat and “last shower: three days ago”. :-P

I’d buy the iPod touch immediately, if it wasn’t for its low storage capacity of 16GBs. The new nanos look like a shrunken iPod Video and feature full video playback functionality. The iPod classic now offers 160GB for the same price as the iPod Video with 80GBs. The iPhone 4GB model got stomped, only the 8GB model still available with a price drop by 200 bucks – that also caused the Apple shares to drop slightly. Now it should be affordable, but I still don’t want that crap contract thing with it. That’s the reason why unlocked iPhones go over the ebay-counter for at least 1000 bucks. How did those sellers get their iPhones without the AT&T contract. I’d really like to know. Well, thanks to Apple’s new price for the 80GB iPod classic I can’t sell my 80GB iPod Video for more than 200 bucks, which leaves me with a gap of another 200 bucks to buy the iPod touch although I don’t want to have that one – 16GBs, man, I really don’t want to think about what I’d like to hear/see/watch the next day, but I’m certain the gadget loving part of my brain will not stop distributing endorphins every time I see the new iPod touch until I buy one.

Apple now sells mobile phones, not right now at the moment but in the near future: the iPhone. This device features everything, from touchscreen, to iPod, to camera, to wireless lan, to … whatever man, it just features everything a handheld device should offer. One mobile phone to rule call them all.
I’ve heard that prices should be USD 399 for the 4GB model. I wonder if this phone takes over the world like the iPod did. And there still isn’t any competiton – that Microsoft zune ought to be, but I think it was a miscarriage produced by marketers in Redmond. Why would anyone want to buy a piece of crap that is the same price as an iPod nano, weighs more, is larger and has features you never wanted an mp3 player to have? Wonder how Nokia and SonyEricsson will respond to the iPhone…

Furthermore the PSP features a neat remote control, which I missed from my iPod, and it has a larger screen. The only thing I’ll miss is the large hard disk of the iPod, the Memory Stick does not provide more than 4GB of storage at the moment (8GB are in development, and the new memory stick micro will have a capacity up to 32GB). The PSP has also got a webbrowser and wireless LAN. So I don’t need to sit in front of my computer anymore to surf the web :-)

An old cassette tray is also adequate to serve as and iPod dock and an jewel case for your iPod at the same time – invented by thinkmo. The installation is quite simple, but make sure to read the instructions very carefully! And what is it good for? Rockbox is an open source replacement firmware for mp3 players and iPodLinux is an open source venture into porting Linux onto the iPod. Providing the ability to play Doom (iDoom) on your iPod and a bunch of other games as well, and being more functional and efficient at the same time, they’re a good replacement for the original Apple firmware.

I also installed the XGL/Compiz packages for superb 3D-Desktop enhancements. But I use Windows XP most of the time because of CounterStrike Source, Battlefield 2 and iTunes. I could live with playing CSS under Linux but I’m still waiting for Apple to release an iTunes Version for Linux systems, and I don’t think that it is a matter of programming difficulties but the lack of market. So here’s my call to Apple:

Please port iTunes to Linux! I’m in a desperate need for an application that corresponends with my iPod in an appropriate way!

One once said: “Linux is for working, Windows is for Solitaire” was right, because I switched from Windows to Linux once and didn’t miss anything, except those things we all hate about using Microsoft products.

I know that there are solutions for my problem, e.g. CrossOverOffice, but I want a more native solution.

Anyhow, I’ll try to bring iPodLinux to my iPod today :-)
